Dr. Chidi Amuta

Dr. Chidi Amuta is an eminent scholar, journalist, and administrator with a distinguished career that spans academia, media, and literary criticism. Dr. Amuta holds a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. He began his academic career as a Lecturer at Obafemi Awolowo University (1979-1981) and later served as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Port-Harcourt (1981-1986). His academic achievements also include serving as a Visiting Fellow at the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy in Boston, USA.

Dr. Amuta’s contributions to journalism are equally impressive. He was a founding member of the Editorial Board of The Guardian newspaper in 1986 and later held prominent positions such as Group Editorial Adviser and Chairman of the Editorial Board of The Daily Times. He also served as Managing Director of The Post Express Newspapers and Editor of Platform Magazine.

In addition to his media and academic roles, Dr. Amuta has made significant contributions to literature and literary criticism. He is the author of Towards a Sociology of African Literature (1986) and The Theory of African Literature (1988), both of which have had a lasting impact on the study of African literature. Notably, Dr. Amuta is also the author of Prince of the Niger, a biographical work on General Ibrahim Babangida, which provides an in-depth exploration of the former Nigerian leader’s life and legacy. His prolific writing includes hundreds of specialized articles on various issues related to international and Nigerian affairs.

Currently, Dr. Amuta serves as Chairman and CEO of Wilson & Weizmann Associates Ltd., and is also the Chairman of Outcomes Communications Ltd. and the Port Harcourt Literary Society. His deep insights into African literature, media, and socio-political issues, combined with his extensive experience, make Dr. Amuta a highly esteemed speaker for this colloquium.

His participation in the event will certainly add more flavor to the discussions in honor of General Ibrahim Babangida.
