HOW WE WORK

AFRIEF seeks to transform Africa’s economic systems rather than merely optimize existing models. Our work integrates ethical ideology, applied research, policy engagement, and practical implementation, advancing Islamic Economics as a credible alternative to exploitative capitalist and socialist frameworks.

We collaborate with governments, institutions, private sector actors, and communities to design Shariah-compliant, justice-oriented economic systems that promote shared prosperity, ecological responsibility, and human dignity. While we align with global development objectives such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement, our primary reference point is the Islamic ethical economic system.

AFRIEF operates as a catalyst, convener, and system-builder, strengthening planning, financing, and institutional capacities at national and community levels to support ethical, inclusive, and resilient development.

Our Operating Model

AFRIEF works across four mutually reinforcing pillars:

  1. Thought Leadership & Policy Innovation
  • Conduct research to challenge dominant economic paradigms and propose Islamic economic alternatives rooted in justice, risk-sharing, and productive activity.
  • Advise governments, regional bodies, and the private sector on ethical, Shariah-compliant economic strategies.
  • Produce policy papers, white papers, and thought leadership to shape discourse and public policy.
  1. Programs & Pilot Projects
  • Design and implement initiatives that demonstrate Islamic Economics in practice across sectors such as finance, agriculture, SMEs, and climate-resilient development.
  • Focus on impact investing, Halal economy development, and inclusive entrepreneurship.
  • National Focal Points execute projects locally, ensuring relevance and measurable impact.
  1. Knowledge Sharing & Capacity Building
  • Provide education, training, and mentorship for policymakers, practitioners, and entrepreneurs.
  • Organize workshops, webinars, and forums to cultivate expertise and innovation in Islamic economics.
  • Build a network of African and global experts to strengthen sustainable institutional capacity.
  1. Engagement, Advocacy & Strategic Partnerships
  • Convene the Africa Islamic Economic Forum (AIEF) as a platform for multi-stakeholder dialogue and collaboration.
  • Partner with governments, international institutions, and civil society to scale initiatives and influence policy.
  • Serve as a voice for principled economic alternatives, advocating for ethical, inclusive, and sustainable economic models.

The AFRIEF Value Chain

To translate Islamic economic principles into measurable outcomes, AFRIEF applies a structured, adaptive value chain:

  1. Diagnosis & Ethical Impact Assessment
Identify structural constraints, social impacts, and opportunities for Islamic economic intervention.
  2. Strategy & System Design
Develop sectoral and national strategies integrating Islamic finance, market development, and institutional reform, tailored to local priorities.
  3. Project Structuring & Ethical Financing
Design bankable, Shariah-compliant projects and mobilize ethical financing, ensuring scalability with social and environmental integrity.
  4. Evaluation & Continuous Learning
Monitor outcomes, refine strategies, and embed lessons into policy, practice, and institutional systems.

Our Expertise

AFRIEF provides deep expertise across the Islamic economy value chain:

  • Socio-economic and ethical impact assessments
  • Islamic economy and sectoral growth strategies
  • Legal, regulatory, and institutional framework design
  • Shariah-compliant investment and financing models
  • Project preparation and transaction advisory
  • Policy research, white papers, and position statements

Our interventions are designed to build domestic capability, institutional resilience, and policy coherence, ensuring that Islamic economic development is sustainable, locally owned, and transformative.

Sustainable Capacity & System Building

Capacity building is central to AFRIEF’s mission, not an add-on.

  • We partner with governments, institutions, and communities to embed knowledge, systems, and leadership locally.
  • Every engagement includes clear milestones, knowledge-transfer mechanisms, and exit strategies, avoiding perpetual advisory dependency.
  • By focusing on systemic, scalable interventions, AFRIEF contributes to the emergence of ethical, resilient, and sovereign African economies grounded in Islamic values.
